Welcome to … Mary Jane’s House of Glass

And House of Soy Candles & Amazing Glass Items

We are a small family business that was started in July of 2000 with a creative thought and a clear vision from Mary Jane. As she sat on the couch at her daughters house, glancing at an old wooden built-in book case from a 1970’s home, she gave a long stare and a deep thought and said “I could use that book case.”

I asked, “For what?”

She said, “The shelving is perfectly spaced to display a set of bongs. I think I’d like to open a headshop and call it Mary Janes House of Glass, so everybody knows what kind of store I am.”

With that, she took the lease and paid for it with her mortage money from her house. The store sat empty for 30 days. She sat on the floor with a dial phone (now replaced by the iPhone) and started calling blowers wondering how she would fill the store.

Finally, she found someone that believed in her. His name was Mike from Sky Glass. He promised to send enough of an assortment to get her going. He agreed to be paid back in 30 days. He said, “I think your store will be very successful and I trust you. And store number one on Mill Plain, in the little blue house began.

On opening day, Mary Jane took paint and made a sign in yellow that read “Glass Pipes”. Mill Plain was a one-way and as people flew by and read the sign she heard their brakes being slammed on as they turned to come back.

The first day, 69 people walked in. She had started the day without even a cash register but had a box on the floor, pen and paper. Mary Jane worked open to close everyday of the week. She wanted the hours to be similar to a target   MJ2  or a grocery store. She realized fast she needed help and then along came my brother, Brandon, who volunteered by saying, “Mom, I will be your partner.” And so it was.

Brandon was going to college and working at UPS at the time. He started Mary Janes to help out mom and never left. Mom and brother worked that location for one year, then of course…trouble. The state said since it was a gravel driveway and in order to stay and operate a business, a $20,000 paved road would need put in. We left in 30 days, moved to a spot not far away on 164th which is still up and running and is called store one – our home base.

Pops came to work then, and had so much knowledge to offer. He had great business sense and sold our candles like no other. He became the buyer and did a great job. Brandon and pops do it together now and we have became an even stronger family because of it.

During this time, I (now “Baby Jane”) was in the Dental assisting field and had been for 12 years working for a endodontist. I decided to pick up some extra shifts at Mary Jane’s in the evenings. I realized how much I valued the customers and their appreciation for this small family business. I could help and be a part of new ideas and I was ready to start a new career. I watched my brother get ready to open our second location on 4th Plain and Andresen, in which Tommy Chong did a successful grand opening 4th of July party and I decided “I’m all in” and decided to follow in the family business. My store, store three, was opened in Hazel Dell and customers lined up for yet another Tommy Chong grand opening!!

We decided it was time to expand across the river into oregon, we opened store four on NW trendy 23rd.

Ben the youngest of the family, has grown up with our family business and watched his mom, dad, sister and brother. He just graduated from high school and now has his own store, number five in Washougal that he runs and is doing great. Now, we have begun our first franchise with store number six on Mill Plain!!

People fell in love with Mary Jane because she let people be people. She understood them and listened to their stories. She allowed freedom of speech in the store to say words like “bong”. She really wanted to provide customer service above and beyond another retail store. She wanted everybody greeted at the door and treated like royalty. She refused to sell porn, damaged goods or any meth pipes. All of our products are of the highest quality because she bought from local blowers to help support the families around us. This one small pipe dream became our families dream too. We all came together and work together as Mary Jane and family. We will always be thankful for the strength and struggle one mother put out to make us all successful.
We are well known for our 25 hour burning soy candles too, over 50 different fragrances.

And that brings us to today with the grand opening of our website for Mary Janes house of glass. We hope you enjoy our small family business as much as we do!!! We have some great, unique products and offer customer service to each individual!! Thank you to Clark County and Portland OR for shopping at Mary Janes, thank you to all of our wonderful staff, and we appreciate your business and will provide it to you for years to come!!

Our mission statement has always been BUY LOCAL, BUY AMERICAN, BUY MARYJANES!!
